Going undercover in Bali

Yudisthira receive training

Yudisthira, an active member of the WSPA-led Asian Coalition for Farm Animals (ACFA), has been working on a two-part farm welfare campaign consisting of an assessment of poultry welfare in the wet markets of Java and an assessment of antibiotic residues in broiler chicken meat sold in the wet markets of Denpasar, Bali.

These markets traditionally sell live animals out in the open. Depending on the region, animals are usually caged and killed for live preparation.

As part of its capacity-building work in Asia, the Farm Welfare team commissioned Ecostorm to provide Yudisthira with the skills and understanding necessary to successfully use video and investigative journalism to gather visual materials and information for use in their campaigns.

This took the form of a nine day training course in undercover investigations.

Learning new skills

The training saw Yudisthira receive instruction in operating PD150 DV cameras (crew cameras), and covert cameras (pinhole and self-made bag cameras), shooting basic sequences for editing, planning investigations, writing storyboards, filming in the field, carrying out interviews and logging footage.

Some of the footage and interviews gathered during the course will form part of Yudisthira’s farm welfare campaign video, which was presented to the Indonesian
Government in January 2008.

As well as providing Yudisthira with new skills in investigations and filming, the training gave them the opportunity to further refine their current campaign strategy.
